At the moment supermarkets in the UK have decided that if you look under the age of 25 they have the right to ask for proof of age, which doesn’t bother me because I always carry my drivers license in wallet anway since even though I am 24 I do look a little bit younger so I’m used to providing proof of age.
However, last night I was a little embarresed whilst doing a spot of shopping at Morrisons (a UK supermarket chain, store: The Mill, Paisley) when at the end of my shopping I was unable to purchase alcohol. The reason being that even though I was paying for it and I provided the cashier with my drivers license I was simply refused because my girlfriend who is 23 never had any ID with her.
I was definitely a little bit shocked when the cashier told me this and assumed she must be getting it wrong so I asked to speak to a supervisor who seemed to take forever to come over but when she finally did she told me that this was company policy! So that means if a person is shopping in Morrisons with a teenager they too will be refused when attempting to purchase alcohol, even if the person paying is of legal age and has sufficient ID? A bit ridiculous don’t you think?
The supervisor went on to tell me my refusal was because they believed I was buying the alcohol for a minor, in this case they thought the minor was my girlfriend who I will tell you again is 23!
All in all it wasn’t the best shopping experience of my life however, I did leave the rest of the items at the till, left the shop, drove up the road 5mins to Morrisons Neilston Road and did the same thing where I was allowed to buy my alcohol. But everyone has to agree that this policy is a little ridiculous, isn’t it!?!?!
